The Categoría Primera A 1961 was the fourteenth edition of the Colombian football championship . The championship could win for the sixth time Millonarios before Independiente Medellín . The top scorer was the Argentine Alberto Perazzo from Santa Fe with 31 goals.

As in the previous year, 12 teams played. Unión Magdalena no longer took part. The new participant was Once Caldas , a merger of the disappeared Deportes Caldas and Once Deportivo clubs.

The champion qualified for the Copa Campeones de América in 1962 .

All teams played against each other four times.
