The logo of the EU Council Presidency is the graphic symbol of the Union member state that holds the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union . It is regularly designed or commissioned by them. It is not an official symbol of the European Union (see: Symbols of the European Union ).

This is usually a graphic symbol, which is supplemented with a reference to the corresponding presiding Union member state and the European Union. Several graphic and color variants of the logo are often given, possible and / or in use. The logo is regularly used only once for a Council Presidency. In the case of the Trio Council Presidencies of Spain / Belgium / Hungary in the years 2010 to 2011, the core of all three Council Presidencies was the same logo with a few minor color adjustments and additions.

The oldest logo known to the Council of the European Union comes from the Belgian EU Council Presidency in 1987.

Theme of the logo

The presiding Union member state regularly elects a logo for its presidency that positively represents its country in connection with the European Union. The logo should also be one

  • be a determining characteristic of the identity of the respective chairperson and
  • present the position and status of the relevant Union member state in the EU from their own perspective and
  • bring the interests of the European Community to the fore, and
  • show historical similarities.

The logo is often accompanied by a declaration on the website of the presiding EU member state to unequivocally convey the message behind it to European citizens and the other member states.

According to information from the Council of the European Union, the logo of the Union member state of the current EU Council Presidency is something " that serves as an indispensable visual symbol, a mark of your identity, a message to Europe and the whole world ".

The logo will be used in all publications of the presiding EU member state, the online presence, in event decorations, in the Justus Lipsius building in Brussels and on other occasions of the official presidency events.
