Opening ceremony in the Athenaeum in Bucharest

The Romanian Council Presidency designates Romania's presidency of the Council of Ministers of the EU for the first half of 2019. Romania begins the ninth trio with Finland and Croatia . It is the first Council Presidency of the country that joined the EU in 2007 , thus succeeding the Presidency of Austria . The 2019 European elections with the ninth direct election to the European Parliament will also take place during the Romanian Council Presidency .

Priorities of the Romanian EU Council Presidency

The Romanian Presidency will focus on:

  1. Converging Europe: growth, cohesion, competitiveness, connectivity
  2. A safe Europe
  3. Europe as a stronger global actor
  4. A Europe of common values

The logo portrays a European Union that is mobile, confident, dynamic, but also committed to its common values. Aesthetically, the European Union is represented as a wolf , an animal known in the myths of most European cultures . In addition, the logo shows a European Union that is committed to protecting biodiversity .

criticism

Even before and at the beginning of the Council Presidency, the media reported concerns and criticism that the Romanian government under Viorica Dăncilă was taking over the Council Presidency. Due to the strong domestic political pressure of the social liberal government with regular mass protests in view of the perceived dismantling of the rule of law on the one hand and the numerous European political challenges such as the adoption of a new EU budget, Brexit and the election of a new EU Commission, it is questionable whether the Romanian Government could successfully carry out a successful Council Presidency. Seldom, according to the Handelsblatt, has an EU member state assuming the Council Presidency been met with so much skepticism.

Platinum sponsors of the Romanian EU Council Presidency are Mercedes-Benz , Renault , Digi and Coca-Cola . Foodwatch criticizes that “in the face of rampant obesity and diseases such as type 2 diabetes, such a sponsorship partnership is absolutely inappropriate”. Also LobbyControl kritistert sponsorship as "highly problematic", the policy should be independent in a democracy and are committed to the common good, which is not given with such sponsorship. The criticism was also taken up by Spiegel Online and Rayk Anders for funk and mentioned in the taz .
