Justus Lipsius Building
The Justus Lipsius building is a central conference and press center for the Council of the European Union and the European Council at the headquarters of the EU bodies in Brussels and houses most of the offices of the Council Secretariat . The meetings of the highest bodies are held in the neighboring Europa building .
history
The council building was erected on a site that was previously crossed by Justus-Lipsius- Strasse, which connected rue de la Loi / Wetstraat with rue Belliard / Belliardstraat.
In 1985, on the initiative of the Belgian government , the Council decided to have a new building erected to better suit its space requirements and to entrust the Belgian State Office responsible for public works with the construction management. The foundation stone for the new building was laid in 1989 on a piece of land made available by Belgium, and the opening ceremony took place on May 29, 1995 under the French Presidency.
Numerous architects, engineers and companies from several member states of the European Union were involved in this major project.
The total area of 215,000 m² is divided into three separate, but closely related areas: conferences, secretariat and infrastructure.
In 2003 it became known that a sophisticated interception system had already been installed at the time of construction. Some of the devices found were even cast in concrete.
The neighboring Europa building was completed in 2016 and has been the seat of the Council of the European Union and the European Council since January 2017. The press center will remain in the Justus Lipsius building. Both buildings are connected by two pedestrian bridges.
