The Lex building is an extension of the Council of the European Union and the European Council in Brussels , the headquarters of which is the Justus Lipsius building . Together with the Europa building , into which the European Council is moving, the three structures form a coherent ensemble of buildings. Opposite them are the Berlaymont and the Charlemagne , which are used by the Commission . The address is Rue de la Loi / Wetstraat 145.

history

Work on the 20 storeys (5 underground and 15 above ground), 73 m high building began in 2003 according to the plans of the architects Jaspers and Eyers. It had become necessary because, with the enlargement of the EU in 2004, more office space was needed for the institutions of the European Union . In 2007 the building was completed.

use

The building currently houses a large canteen as well as the translators and the legal service of the Council of the European Union. For a short time it was also discussed as the new headquarters of the European External Action Service .

Since 2007, the Lex building has housed the translation service of the General Secretariat of the Council, which is responsible for translating documents into all the official languages of the European Union. This building now houses all the language units that were previously spread across different buildings in Brussels, including the new language units that have been added as a result of the enlargement of the EU.

Details

The building was designed by Jean-Michel Jaspers and John Eyers from Leuven ( Belgium ). It is adapted to its surroundings by taking up the curved shape of the Berlaymont building , the seat of the European Commission . It offers space for offices, conference rooms, a restaurant, an underground car park, storage rooms and archives.

The latest technologies are used in this building to ensure environmental protection, sustainable development, energy saving and the comfort of users.
