Saint-Josse-ten-Noode ( French ) or Sint-Joost-ten-Node ( Dutch ) is one of 19 municipalities in the bilingual Brussels-Capital Region in Belgium . With 27,457 inhabitants (January 1, 2019) on an area of just 1.14 square kilometers, it is the smallest municipality in the Brussels-Capital Region and at the same time the most densely populated in Belgium with around 24,000 inhabitants per square kilometer.
Saint-Josse-ten-Noode / Sint-Joost-ten-Node is an independent municipality and is located on the outskirts of downtown Brussels between the actual city of Brussels in the south and Schaerbeek / Schaarbeek in the north. Immediately across the ring road that forms the southwestern municipal boundary of Saint-Josse / Sint-Joost is the Rue Neuve / Nieuwstraat , the inner-city pedestrian zone of Brussels.
In Saint-Josse-ten-Noode / Sint-Joost-ten-Node, among other things, the Botanical Garden ( Parc du Botanique / Kruidtuin ) is located at Schaarbeeker Tor, which also includes a cultural center. The municipality has a share in the representative Rue Royale / Koningsstraat , which runs from the royal city palace to Schaerbeek / Schaarbeek .
population
The municipality of Saint-Josse-ten-Noode / Sint-Joost-ten-Node has the highest proportion of immigrants in the country - called allochthonous in Belgium . The then mayor Jean Demannez said in 2003 that only 20 percent of the population had a Belgian grandfather. The proportion of residents with a foreign passport is 42% (2015), including mainly Turks and Moroccans and now Bulgarians and Romanians.
With an average per capita income of 8,690 euros (as of 2015), Saint Josse / Sint-Joost is the poorest municipality in Belgium and is therefore well below the average for the Brussels-Capital Region, which at 13,831 euros (2015) has the lowest income of the Belgian regions.
history
The original municipality was more than twice as large, but as part of the expansion of the city of Brussels in 1855, 142 of its then 253 hectares had to cede more than half of its area to the city of Brussels, from which the Quartier Léopold with today's European quarter as the residential area of the Brussels residents Bourgeoisie emerged.
politics
Guy Cudell was the long-time mayor of Saint-Josse-ten-Noode / Sint-Joost-ten-Node, from 1953 until his death in 1999. The socialist was one of the last mayors in Belgium who still wore a two-pointed hat. From 1999 to 2012 Jean Demannez , also a socialist, took over the office. In 2012, Emir Kir was elected as the new mayor; he is also a member of the Socialist Party and one of the first mayors of Belgium of Turkish origin.
