Koekelberg ( ˈkukəlbɛrç , ) has 21,990 inhabitants (January 1, 2019) on an area of just 1.17 square kilometers, making it the smallest of the 19 municipalities in the after Saint-Josse-ten-Noode / Sint-Joost-ten-Node bilingual Brussels-Capital Region in Belgium .
The national basilica of the Sacred Heart , one of the largest churches in the world , is known across the country on the hill of the same name . It was built in the Art Deco style in the first half of the 20th century and stands at the end of a monumental street axis. In front of the basilica is the Elisabethpark .
Tram line 19 goes through Koekelberg. The underground lines 2 and 6 also meet at Simonis station .
