The Cyprus Council Presidency denotes the presidency of the Republic of Cyprus in the EU Council of Ministers for the second half of 2012. The predecessors of the Trio Council Presidencies are Poland and Denmark .

Interior Minister Eleni Mavrou presented the topics that are to play a role under the Cypriot Council Presidency to the German public for the first time. Thus one tries to strengthen one's own (European) competitiveness through solidarity and efficiency and to perceive the role as a global player . On the one hand, the planned fiscal union is to be pushed further, and on the other hand, the way is to be prepared for a common refugee and migration policy. Topics that began within the trio should be pursued and continued (e.g. energy ).

Cypriot Presidency priorities

The first goal of the Cyprus Presidency is to "work for a better Europe".

The priorities of the Cyprus Presidency are therefore largely to:

  • more efficient and sustainable Europe,
  • Europe with a better performing economy based on growth,
  • Europe that means more to its citizens, thus a Europe of solidarity and social cohesion,
  • Europe in the world, closer to its neighbors,

to stand up. The website of the Cypriot EU Council Presidency is available in the three working languages of the European Union - German, English and French, as well as in the two official languages of the Republic of Cyprus, Greek and Turkish (see also Official Languages of the European Union ).

Unlike the previous trio presidencies from Spain, Belgium and Hungary, Poland, Denmark and Cyprus do not use a common logo . The logo combines European and local symbols in a stylized form. The graphic part of the logo represents a fusion between a ship in dark blue color and a bird looking to the left. The dark blue color symbolizes Europe and the light blue color represents the sea that surrounds Cyprus and an essential element of Cypriot life and history was and is. The colors copper and green in the "sail" of the ship / bird are based on the colors of the flag of Cyprus . Green stands for the Cypriot island ( olive trees ), copper stands for the long tradition of copper mining in Cyprus and refers to the island's Latin name (cuprum) . The ship is intended to refer to the island character of Cyprus and its long tradition in shipping, the bird is a universal symbol of peace and a messenger of messages.

The letter combination CY has the same meaning as the official code of Cyprus (for example in the list of national vehicle symbols ). In connection with the year 2012 and the abbreviation EU , reference is made directly to the Cypriot EU Council Presidency in 2012.
