Copa Campeones de America 1960

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Copa Campeones de América 1960 was the 1st edition of the most important South American football competition for club teams. 7 teams took part, including 6 national champions from the previous year and the winner of the cup competition from Brazil, the Taça Brasil , as no national championship has yet been held there. Ecuador , Peru and Venezuela did not have a representative at the start. The tournament began on April 19 and ended on June 19, 1960 with the final second leg. The Uruguayan champions CA Peñarol won the final against Club Olimpia from Paraguay.

history

The Copa Libertadores was the second attempt after the Campeonato Sudamericano de Campeones in 1948 in Santiago de Chile in South America to establish a competition for national champions in football. The introduction of the Copa Libertadores was also inspired by the European Champions Cup, which had been played since the 1955/56 season. The competition was made even more attractive by the possibility that the strongest club teams from Europe and South America each year met in the so-called World Cup , which was also held for the first time in 1960, in order to determine the supposedly best club team in the world.
