Luis Maidana

Luis María Maidana Silveira (born February 22, 1934 in Pan de Azúcar , Uruguay), Luis Maidana for short , is a former Uruguayan soccer goalkeeper who took part in the 1962 World Cup with the national team of his home country .

The only 1.75 meter tall Luis Maidana, who came from Pan de Azúcar to Montevideo and played there from 1951 in the youth of Peñarol , moved up in the 1952 season for the first time in the squad of the first team of the Aurinegros . He came to use at the latest in 1954, when the previous year's champion Peñarol repeated his success. It took four years until the next championship. With the 1958 championship, Peñarol started a decade of dominance in South American football. From 1958 to 1962 Maidana's team became champions five times in a row. In 1960, the club was able to win the first ever Copa Libertadores . By winning the Copa Libertadores and defending the title the next year, the club took part in the World Cup in 1960 and 1961 . The first edition of the intercontinental competition Maidana's team lost to Real Madrid . The next year, after a 5-0 win in the second leg against Benfica Lisbon , they finally won the World Cup. After that, Maidana was able to win two championships, but no more international titles, by the end of his career.

National team

Due to the successful time with the CA Peñarol, Maidana had of course aroused the national coach's interest. Therefore, he made his debut in the goal of the national team on May 2, 1959. From that point on, he was part of the national team for ten years. The highlight of his career in the national team was his call to the squad for the 1962 World Cup in Chile . During the World Cup, however, he was not used, but only previously in the qualification against Bolivia . In total, he came up to his last use for the Celeste on June 8, 1969 on ten internationals. He conceded 17 goals.
