The Copa Libertadores 2020 , officially also Copa Conmebol Libertadores 2020 , is the 61st edition of the most important South American football competition for club teams.
The competition is organized by the South American football association CONMEBOL . A total of 47 teams will take part in the 2020 season, including defending champion Flamengo Rio de Janeiro from Brazil and the winner of the Copa Sudamericana 2019 Independiente del Valle from Ecuador . The tournament began on January 21, 2020 with the qualifying round and should end on November 21, 2020 with the final in Maracanã . Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the season was suspended after the second round of the group stage in March. The sequel is planned from September 15 and the finale is scheduled for January 2021.

Qualification draw
The draws for the games in the qualification and group stages took place on December 16, 2019 at the CONMEBOL Convention Center in Luque (Paraguay) . The teams were seeded in the Copa Libertadores according to their CONMEBOL ranking. Three factors were taken into account:
Performance over the last 10 years, taking into account the Copa Libertadores results for the period 2010-2019
Historical coefficient, taking into account the Copa Libertadores results for the period 1960–2008
National championship with bonus points to national champions of the last 10 years

The first and second qualifying rounds and the group stage were drawn. No draw was made for the third round of qualification, the pairings were determined in advance. The numbers in brackets are the result of the CONMEBOL ranking.

Group stage draw
For the group stage, the 32 teams were drawn into eight groups of four teams from each of the four pots. Teams from the same association could not be drawn into the same group, with the exception of the third qualifying round winners, who were assigned to Pot 4. Oddities
On the 2nd day of Group E, Grêmio and Internacional - both from the Brazilian port city of Porto Alegre - met for the first time in this competition. In the closing stages of the game there were physical clashes between the players of both teams. As the situation escalated, club officials and substitutes ran onto the field.
