Performance over the last 10 years, taking into account the Copa Libertadores results for the period 2010-2019
Historical coefficient, taking into account the Copa Libertadores results for the period 1960–2008
National championship with bonus points to national champions of the last 10 years
The first and second qualifying rounds and the group stage were drawn. No draw was made for the third round of qualification, the pairings were determined in advance. The numbers in brackets are the result of the CONMEBOL ranking.

Group stage draw
For the group stage, the 32 teams were drawn into eight groups of four teams from each of the four pots. Teams from the same association could not be drawn into the same group, with the exception of the third qualifying round winners, who were assigned to Pot 4. Oddities
On the 2nd day of Group E, Grêmio and Internacional - both from the Brazilian port city of Porto Alegre - met for the first time in this competition. In the closing stages of the game there were physical clashes between the players of both teams. As the situation escalated, club officials and substitutes ran onto the field. Due to assault, the Argentine referee Fernando Rapallini sent four players from each team with the red card. The game was then brought to an end with 16 minutes of added time.
