Construction of the Estadio Alejandro Villanueva began in 1969. After more than five years of construction, the arena was completed in 1974 and inaugurated on December 27 of that year. The first game to be played in the new stadium was between Alianza Lima and the Uruguayan Club Nacional Montevideo . The final score was 2-2. The sports facility was slightly overcrowded in the first game, because instead of the approved 35,000 spectators, 37,000 of them filled the stands of the Estadio Alejandro Villanueva.
Alianza Lima decided to build a stadium as early as 1951 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the association. Due to economic problems, however, construction was postponed for the time being. Only in 1969 did the construction of a new venue begin. The architect was Walter Lavalleja Sarriés, who was also responsible for the Estadio Monumental "U" . After completion, the venue was named Estadio Alianza Lima . In 2000, around a quarter of a century after the inauguration, it was renamed Estadio Alejandro Villanueva in memory of Alejandro Villanueva (1908–1944), one of the most important players in the club.
The stadium has four floodlight masts that were installed in 1980. On the grounds of the Estadio Alejandro Villanueva there is also a gym , radio and television stations, a medical department, several parking spaces, a room for press conferences, several administrative offices and a shopping center , which is used for better marketing and economic growth in this district should.
