The Estadio Monumental "U" (officially: Estadio Monumental ) is the club's own football stadium of the Peruvian football club Universitario de Deportes . The arena, located in the capital Lima, has a capacity of 80,093 spectators, making it the largest football stadium in South America . It replaced the old Estadio Teodoro Lolo Fernández venue from 1954.
history
Construction work began on January 16, 1991 and was carried out by the Peruvian construction company GREMCO Progreso International . After around nine years of construction, the venue was opened on July 2, 2000. The building was designed by the Uruguayan architect Walter Lavalleja Sarriés . The grandstands consist of two levels. Firstly, the lower part with 58,577 seats and 600 business seats (west stand) in the stands. On the other hand, the upper circular ring with 1,251 boxes on four levels with a total of 20,916 seats. There are 239 seats available for journalists in the press stand.
The seating in the east and west stands are equipped with multi-colored seats, while the north and south tiers consist of stone steps. The entire sports complex with stadium has an area of 186,542 m² and there are two more soccer fields next to the venue. The floodlight system consists of 160 spotlights, each with an output of 2,000 watts ; this generates a total of 2,200 lux . In addition, a display board measuring 10 × 8 m is installed on top of the north tier and a video wall measuring 10 × 6 m on the south tier .
Despite being the largest stadium in the country, the 2004 Copa America and 2005 U-17 World Cup were held in different stadiums. At the Sudamericano Femenino 2003 tournament (South American women's football championship), on the other hand, games were also played in the Estadio Monumental. Between 2002 and 2007, the authorities prevented the Clásico between Universitario de Deportes and Alianza Lima from being played in the arena because of alleged security deficiencies .
Due to the protests in Chile , the Estadio Monumental was chosen as the venue for the final of the Copa Libertadores 2019 instead of the Estadio Nacional in Santiago de Chile originally intended for this purpose .
Peruvian national soccer team
For some time wore Peruvian national football team play their home games at the stadium "U" , since in the regular venue Estadio Nacional , a synthetic turf was laid and the FIFA the Estadio Garcilaso de la Vega in the lying in 3,416 meters above sea level city Cusco does not allow for international matches. In 2007, the World Football Association decided a maximum limit for stadiums of 3,000 m above sea level . The national team of Peru has a balanced, slightly negative balance in the Estadio Monumental . In 18 games they have five wins, seven draws and six defeats.
