RBD was a pop music group from Mexico City , Mexico , best known for the telenovela Rebelde . RBD sold over 57 million albums worldwide in the four years of their career.

Since it was founded in 2004, she has become one of the most commercially successful acts in Latin American music and has also released her albums in Portuguese (for the Brazilian market) and English.

In addition to a nomination for a Latin Grammy Award in 2006, RBD also won three Billboard Latin Music Awards in the same year.

It turned out to be helpful for the career as a band that all members were already known to the (younger) target audience from the successful telenovela Rebelde , in which they played the members of a pop group. However, at that time the band members could already look back on careers as television actors, singers and child stars.

TV career

Rebelde

Rebelde is a Mexican telenovela produced by Televisa in which the characters are portrayed by members of RBD. It is a remake of the Argentine telenovela Rebelde Way , which was shown in Germany on Nick . The series has a total of three seasons.

The series takes place in the Elite Way School, a recognized school in Mexico City . This is where the six young people Mia, Miguel, Roberta, Diego, Giovanni and Lupita meet for the first time. The plot of the series is that the students form a band called RBD and later successfully tour Mexico. All actors who embody this band are successful in real life with the band of the same name.

RBD: La Familia

The sitcom has been broadcast on Mexican television since 2007. In it the band members embody themselves, the actions are fictitious.

Members

2004-2005: Rebelde

RBD made their debut with the album Rebelde , which was released under the record label EMI . The songwriters for this album were u. a. Carlos Lara (aka DJ Kafka) and Max di Carlo, whose songs were just as popular as the series. The first three singles ( Rebelde , Solo Quédate en Silencio and Sálvame ) were number one hits in Mexico, the fourth single Un Poco de Tu Amor reached number two on the Mexican charts. In November 2005, a Portuguese-language album was released on the Brazilian market, which was called Rebelde (Edição Brasil) . Although they did not record an English-language album, Rebelde sold so well in the United States that it even landed at # 95 on the US Top 100 Albums Chart and ranked second on the Top Latin Albums. Rebelde has sold over 400,000 in the US and got diamond in Mexico and gold in Brazil, where it sold a total of 1.4 million times. In July 2005 a live CD / DVD was released, called Tour Generación RBD En Vivo , on which the sold out tour through Mexico can be seen (35 sold out concerts, six of them in Mexico City).

2005-2006: Nuestro amor

In October 2005 her second studio album Nuestro Amor , produced by Carlos Lara, was released , which hit new sales records in Mexico. Namely, it sold 127 thousand times the first day and 160 thousand times the first week. In the USA the album spent three weeks in the Latin album charts and again reached the top 100 of the American singles charts at number 88. The first four single releases landed at number one in Mexico. In the United States, only Nuestro Amor (# 6), Aún Hay Algo (# 24) and Este Corazón (# 10) made the Hot Latin Charts.

In early 2006, RBD toured the United States for the first time, recording their second CD / DVD, Live In Hollywood (Producer: Carlos Lara) , to be released in April . This CD / DVD reached number six on the Billboard Top Latin Albums Chart. A short time later, in May 2006, the Portuguese version of Nuestro Amor , called Nosso Amor Rebelde (Edição Brasil) , was released especially for Brazilian fans. At the end of the third season of Rebelde , the pop band announced that they would be making a new telenovela and recording an English-language album that would feature new songs and old songs from the first two albums. In 2006 RBD were also nominated for the Latin Grammy Award in the category Best Pop Album by a Group or Duo with Nuestro Amor . Although they lost the award to La Oreja de Van Gogh , a Mexican casting band, they performed a new version of Tras de Mí .

2006 was also the year in which RBD became known in Spain.

2006–2007: Celestial , Celestial (versão Brasil) & Rebels

A few months after the release of Live in Hollywood , the third studio album Celestial was released in November 2006 , also produced by Carlos Lara. It debuted at number 15 on the US Billboard 200 as it sold over 137,000 times in the US in one week.

A month later, their first English-language album, Rebels , was released, which entered the US Billboard 200 album charts at number 40 and sold 94,000 copies in the first week. On the day of the release, the band logo on the album cover changed from white to pink.

The DVD Live in Rio was released on her tour of Brazil . There they were also honored for their over 2.5 million CDs and DVDs sold. Meanwhile, the album Rebelde was at the top of the Spanish charts for five weeks and went double platinum for 160,000 copies sold. Nuestro Amor sold just as well to get double platinum, while Celestial , released in Spain on March 12, 2007, went gold in the charts in just three weeks. On March 2, 2007, shortly after pictures of his wedding surfaced on the internet, Christian Chavez confessed that he was gay . In a letter on RBD's website, he asked his fans for understanding and acceptance. The pop group then worked on two projects: on the one hand, Sálvame , an organization that aims to help homeless youth to gain protection and education; and on the other hand La Familia , their new sitcom . At the end of March, Dulce María commented in an interview that the Sálvame project would start on May 1st and that RBD was also thinking about helping children in Brazil and Spain.

RBD was nominated four times in three different categories for the 2007 Billboard Latin Music Awards , including two nominations for Latin Pop Album of the Year By a Duo or Group , with Celestial and Live in Hollywood . They were also nominated for their Tour Generación 2006 in the categories Top Latin Albums Artist of the Year and Latin Tour of the Year . The event took place in Miami on April 26th . They won prizes in all categories. On April 20th, their world tour, Tour Celestial 2007 , began in Ecuador . In July 2007 they toured Romania and released Celestial there . They also shot the video for Bésame Sin Miedo in Transylvania . In the same year they became an advertising medium for Pepsi- Cola in Spanish-speaking countries alongside the Black Eyed Peas . On July 19, 2007, RBD sang their single Bésame Sin Miedo in the Premios Juventud 2007 and won seven awards that evening, including a. Voice of the Moment and Favorite Concert . They sang the single Bésame Sin Miedo in Buscando a Timbiriche and Mexico with Timbriche, a popular group from the eighties and nineties. There was also a re-release by Rebels , in which three hip-hop songs are integrated.

Movie

According to its producer Pedro Damián, who also produced Rebelde , the shooting of a film will begin at the end of 2008, which will show the band and its members from a different side under the title Más Rebelde .

Rivalry with Erreway

There were many rumors that RBD were at odds with the original band Erreway , but both bands denied this when they met in Spain in the summer of 2006 and shot photos together for the press. Camila Bordonaba assured the press that there was only rivalry between the fans of the respective bands, and that the groups themselves were not at war with each other.
