The Hellweg School in Bochum is one of two high schools in the Wattenscheid district . The school was founded in 1872 as a secondary school for girls and opened on June 17, 1873 for Catholic and Protestant girls. On April 1, 1895, the school came under municipal sponsorship.

In 1930, together with a new building , it was aligned with the upper lyceum , but the National Socialists reversed this decision in 1933 because the girls' school system wanted to focus on the role of housewife and mother again. In 1937 there was an understanding and an upper level was set up again. On March 20, 1937, the school was renamed "Oberschule für Mädchen (linguistic form)".

During the Second World War , the lower classes were evacuated to an estate in Podlužany from May to October 1941 against the background of the Kinderland deportation , and in October 1943 there was a major evacuation to Pomerania . In January 1945 they were transported back by train, which took eight days at minus 16 degrees Celsius and with insufficient food.

On January 10, 1968, the newly built school building was inaugurated. The school had 34 teachers and 762 students at the time. In 1972, 956 pupils were taught at the grammar school. In 1980 the school was the largest grammar school in North Rhine-Westphalia with 1,583 students and almost 100 teachers . The enormous number of students could only be dealt with spatially by building pavilions in the schoolyard as additional classrooms. Two classrooms were even created in the auditorium.

Today 968 students are registered at the Hellweg School.

In the quality analysis carried out in 2007, which was ordered by the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia, the grammar school performed well. According to this result, it is one of the most exemplary high schools in North Rhine-Westphalia.

There are also many project opportunities on the part of the school such as B. an exchange project with a high school in Estonia. Hellwegschule takes part in the EU's Comenius project for lifelong learning.
