The Goethe School is a high school in Bochum . It is located on the edge of Bochum's city center , between the pedestrian zone and Bochum's city park , in the immediate vicinity of the art museum.

history

The old building of the Goethe School is one of the most historic buildings in Bochum. This building was built in 1851, making the Goethe School the oldest school in Bochum. It was created primarily at the endeavors of Bochum's mayor Max Greve , first as a provincial trade school , then as a high school and finally as a grammar school.

In the 1960s, the new building was also built (architect Ferdinand Keilmann ), which, in addition to classrooms, mainly houses the science rooms. On October 10, 2003, the new wing of the new upper level building was finally completed and inaugurated.

In the summer of 2004, a large dial with a diameter of 1.40 m and a box with the associated clockwork were found in the roof of the auditorium during renovation work . This clock was installed in the school tower from the last decade of the 19th century until 1968. After a defect, the clockwork was removed and stored in the attic of the auditorium, where it was forgotten. The movement turned out to be completely intact and was restored by a team from Bochum watchmakers. The manual winding of the 50 kg watch weight was replaced by an electric motor. Since 2005 the clock mechanism has been in a showcase in the old school building. The high school's tower clock has been in operation again since 2005 and is operated by a radio clock.
