Juanes
Juanes [ ˈxu̯anes ] (born August 9, 1972 in Medellín / Colombia ; actually Juan Esteban Aristizábal Vázquez ) is a Colombian singer , songwriter and guitarist .
Life
Juanes started playing the guitar at the age of seven. In doing so, he learned from his father and older brothers boleros , tangos , cumbias as well as vallenato and guasca , the folk music of his homeland. He began to focus on traditional Latin American music .
As a teenager he discovered metal music and Metallica became his favorite band. He changed his guitar style and also formed the rock / metal band Ekhymosis . The band released seven albums and achieved high popularity in Colombia among fans of rock and metal music. After eleven years together, Juanes decided to embark on a solo career, which ultimately led to his international breakthrough.
In Germany he became known for the cover version of his own song La Paga , which he produced together with Taboo by the Black Eyed Peas . His breakthrough came in 2005 with the single La camisa negra ( Spanish : the black shirt).
Juanes is committed to peace and international understanding in America by organizing peace concerts ( conciertos por la paz ). As a result of the diplomatic crisis between Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador in 2008, he organized a concert Peace Without Borders ( Paz sin Fronteras ) on the Colombian- Venezuelan border between Cúcuta (Colombia) and San Antonio (Venezuela ), at which Ricardo Montaner (from Venezuela ) among others ), the Colombian Carlos Vives , Juan Luis Guerra from the Dominican Republic, the Ecuadorian Juan Fernando Velasco and the Spaniards Alejandro Sanz and Miguel Bosé took part.
In September he organized another concert for peace without borders with other well-known national and international singers in the Cuban capital Havana . In doing so, he incurred the ire of radical Cuban exiles , who saw it as support for the communist dictatorship in Cuba. In Miami their CDs were destroyed and a black shirt was burned in reference to his famous hit La camisa negra . He even received death threats as a result.
He is also committed to helping children in his home country, Colombia. As a result of this commitment, in 2008 he wrote the song “Paz, paz, paz” for the carol singers and the Dreikönigssingen campaign . In 2011, Juanes sat on a jury that was involved in the selection of the universal logo for human rights .
On the occasion of the Grammy Awards 2020 a tribute concert for Prince took place on January 28, 2020 in the Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles under the motto "Let's Go Crazy: The Grammy Salute to Prince", at which Juanes sang 1999 . The concert aired on U.S. television on April 21, 2020, the fourth anniversary of Prince's death.
Juanes lives in Key Biscayne , Florida with his wife and three children .
