Alongside the cumbia, Vallenato is a predominant form of music on the Atlantic coast of Colombia , which was originally played by an ensemble consisting of an accordion , a double-headed drum (caja) and güira .

Originally Vallenato means "the one born in the valley", meaning the valley between the Pico Cristóbal Colón and the Sierra de Perijá in northeastern Colombia.

Every year in spring, the Festival de la Leyenda Vallenata takes place in Valledupar , where the best performers are chosen for “Rey Vallenato”.

Some of the most famous musicians of this genre at national and Latin American level include Diomedes Díaz and Lisandro Meza. The Grammy winner Jorge Celedón has the Vallenato also helped to international recognition.

The Colombian film Los Viajes del Viento deals with the vallenato and a legend linked to the origins of music.
