The Pico Cristóbal Colón is a mountain in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and named after Christopher Columbus .

The Pico Cristóbal Colón is the highest mountain in Colombia at 5775 m . It is only about 45 km from the Caribbean coast . Its neighboring mountain , the Pico Simón Bolívar , has the same height and is one of the most important natural attractions in Colombia. The Pico Cristóbal Colón is located in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountain range in the northern part of Colombia, in the municipality of Santa Marta in the Department of Magdalena . This region is one of the highest coastal regions.
The notch height of the Pico Cristóbal Colón is 5584 m; this makes it the fifth highest mountain in the world . It was discovered in 1939 by W. Wood, A. Bakerwell and E. Praolini.
Access
The mountain, in the midst of the 3830 square kilometers of natural park Parque Nacional Natural Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is located, is not for climbers and hikers due to political unrest and related safety problems hazardous. Some of these security problems also come from the settled Native American tribes. The military is also active again and again, which is why tourists are often prohibited from entering the area.
