The Estadio Hernando Siles is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the Miraflores district of the Bolivian city of La Paz . It holds around 41,143 spectators and was named in honor of Hernando Siles Reyes , President of Bolivia from 1926 to 1930.
history
The inauguration of the facility took place in 1931. The playing field is 105 meters long and 68 meters wide. The venue is at an altitude of 3637 m , making it one of the highest stadiums in the world.
Foreign teams often complained about being disadvantaged by the altitude and the associated thin air, which requires an acclimatization period for effective adaptation. In May 2007, the world football association FIFA decided to set an altitude limit of 2500 meters above sea level for venues for qualifying matches for football world championships. After protests, this limit was raised to 3000 meters in the following month and the Estadio Hernando Siles received special permission.
The stadium hosted the 1963 Campeonato Sudamericano and 1997 Copa América games . While Bolivia won the first tournament, it lost 3-1 in June 1997 at the Estadio Hernan Siles Brazil. In an elimination match between Hungary and Bolivia for a place at the Football World Cup in 1978, the hosts lost 3-2 after losing 6-0 in their first game in Budapest. In qualifying for the 1994 World Cup , Bolivia defeated Brazil 2-0 here in July 1993 and inflicted their first defeat in a qualifying match on the record world champions and qualified for a World Cup for the first time after the previous two participations did not require a qualification.
At club level, the final first leg of the Copa Sudamericana 2004 between the local club Bolívar and CA Boca Juniors was the highlight. The hosts won 1-0, but lost the second leg in Buenos Aires 2-0. In addition to Bolívar, two other Bolivian first division clubs, Club The Strongest and La Paz FC, play their home games at the Estadio Hernando Siles.
