The Club Escuela Municipal Deportivo Binacional FC - shortened Escuela Municipal Deportivo Binacional , but mainly known as Deportivo Binacional or Binacional - is a Peruvian football club that was founded in 2010 by the then mayor of the Desaguadero district , Puno Juan Carlos Aquino. The team has been playing in the Primera División , the highest Peruvian football league , since the 2018 game year and was able to win the championship title for the first time in the following 2019 season. The club, which is also known as El poderoso del sur , El bi or Los pumas del sur , plays its home games at the Estadio Guillermo Briceño Rosamedina in Juliaca and wears completely sky-blue uniforms.

history

Foundation and league classification

The association was founded on December 18, 2010 by the mayor of the Desaguadero district , Puno region, Juan Carlos Aquino, under the name Club Deportivo Binacional de Desaguadero . The term binacional describes the immediate proximity of the district to the Bolivian border. Aquino became the club's first president as the founder. The home of the club was the country town of Desaguadero and in 2011 they got a place in the League Superior de Puno . This season, which belongs to the Ligas Superiores del Peru , is located in the Peruvian pyramid system on the fourth level and serves to qualify for the Ligas Departamentales del Perú , the regional division and third highest league. This league is the preliminary stage for the Copa Perú , which is a competition in which the best teams of the Departamentales take part and the winner can move up to the highest Peruvian league and the runner-up can move up to the second highest Peruvian league .

Quick success at the amateur level

After no significant successes could be achieved in the first season, succeeded in the following game year 2012 the second place in the Liga Superior de Puno and thus the qualification for the Ligas Departamentales , where in the respective season also the second rank could be achieved, which for Participation in the Copa Perú was enough. There you were listed in Group B of Region VIII and could win this. With a win against the winner of Group A you qualified for the national finals. There they failed in the round of 16 against Deportivo CREDICOOP from Tacna . In the next season 2013 they reached again the participation in the Copa Perú and reached the group stage again the round of 16 of the national stage, where they were eliminated again in the round of 16, this time against the eventual winner of the tournament San Simón de Moquegua from the city of the same name . In the 2014 season, they participated in the competition again, although a third place in the group stage was not enough for participation in the final round. After the format of the Copa Perú was changed for the 2015 season, qualification for the national level was made more difficult and Binacional did not succeed this year.

As a reaction to this failure, Aquino, certain that the sporting development in the small Desaguadero would not be guaranteed, moved the team to the Paucarpata district , where the license from Escuela Municipal de Paucarpata was acquired and from now on in the Liga Distrital de Paucarpata played. The club was also given its current name Club Escuela Municipal Deportivo Binacional FC . The change of district ultimately also resulted from the fact that Aquino expected better players in Paucarpata in order to meet the league requirements with enough footballers from the area. Under the new name and in the new home, the club had an excellent start in the league competitions in the 2016 game year and impressively qualified for the national class of the Copa Perú. There you remained undefeated in six games with four wins and two draws and finished second in the table out of 50 participating teams. The subsequent eighth and quarter-finals they survived successfully and they now played in a group, the La Finalísima , consisting of the four remaining teams for promotion to the Primera División and Segunda División. With the third place, however, this missed and they remained in the fourth-class league Distrital de Paucarpata .

Promotion to the highest Peruvian league

Binacional plowed through the preliminary stages of the Copa Perú under head coach Puchito Flores in the following season 2017 and successfully qualified for this tournament. With the 12th place in the league table, you had to defeat León de Huánuco in the second round to qualify for the second round . The team known as Los cremas del centro was successfully thrown out of the competition in two games with a clear overall result of 11: 2 and Defensor Laure Sur was defeated successfully in the round of 16 . In the quarter-finals Unión San Martín was defeated, which the team could secure a place in La Finalísima for the second time in a row . In the first group game they celebrated a clear 4-0 home win against José Carlos Mariátegui . The second game against Atlético Grau ended in a goalless 0-0 draw and in the third game against Estudiantil CNI they won again 2-0. In the table they were tied with Atlético Grau with seven points, but were crowned the winner of the tournament with a better goal difference and secured promotion to the highest Peruvian league.

Acclimatization in professional football

The 14 game days of Torneo de Verano, in which the 16 participants of the Primera División are divided into two groups, was the first tournament of the league championship in 2018. Binacionals' first game in the first division ended on February 3, 2018 with a 0 : 2 defeat against Academia Deportiva Cantolao in their own stadium. The second league game against Unión Comercio nine days later could already be won 2-1 and the Paraguayan midfielder Milton Benítez became Binacionals' first scorer in the Primera División. With five wins, six draws and three defeats, the Poderoso del Sur ended , as the team is often called, the Verano. Before the Torneo Apertura, the team made a short-term move to Estadio 25 de Noviembre in Moquegua . The aim was to attract a larger number of spectators. There they remained unbeaten in all eight home games (five wins and three draws), but ultimately only got 23 points due to an away weakness and came in eighth. The start of the Torneo Clausura 2018 was weak and as a result, the promotion coach Puchito Flores was relieved of his duties in mid-October. His successor Mario Flores took over Binacional in last place in the table and led the team to 13th place with 17 points. In the overall table, the sum of the three individual tournaments Verano, Apertura and Clausura, the club took eighth place and thus secured a starting place for the Copa Sudamericana 2019 .

First Peruvian Championship 2019

After the end of the 2018 season, the club announced that they would move back to the Puno region and chose the Estadio Guillermo Briceño Rosamedina in Juliaca as their new home. However, this did not meet the requirements of CONMEBOL , which is why the team ultimately competed in the 2019 Copa Sudamericana at the Estadio Monumental de la UNSA in Arequipa. In addition, the coat of arms of the region was integrated again into the logo of the association.

Mario Flores' working paper was not renewed after it expired at the end of the 2018 season and Javier Arce took over as head coach for the 2019 game year . The squad was significantly strengthened at the beginning of the year, for example with the two experienced Colombians Donald Millán and Jeferson Collazos . In the first round of the Copa Sudamericana 2019 they faced the CA Independiente , where both games were lost and El Poderoso del Sur was eliminated from the competition with an overall result of 2: 6. The start of the 2019 league championship started much better for Binacional and the club surprisingly won the Torneo Apertura ahead of Sporting Cristal with 36 points from 17 games . With 11 goals and five assists, newcomer Millán became the best player in the league and contributed to the team's great success alongside Peruvians Marco Aldaír Rodríguez , Andy Polar and Juan Pablo Vergara .

Binacional was unable to maintain this high in the 2019 Clausura for the time being and at the beginning of September Javier Arce terminated his contract after falling out with those responsible. The successor was the experienced Roberto Mosquera . With 28 points, the 2019 Clausura finished fourth in the table. In the overall table they were in first place, but were overtaken by Sporting Cristal, as they received two additional points for the victory of the reserve team in their respective league and thus ended the regular playing time with one point ahead. Second place enabled Binacional to take part in the playoffs for the championship title and qualified ahead of time for the Copa Libertadores 2020 . The semifinals were skipped as the actual winner of the regular season by a bye and the opponent in the two finals was the 23-time champion Alianza Lima , who defeated Sporting Cristal in two games.

Before the most important two games in the club's history, the club experienced a disaster on December 2, 2019. The three players Donald Millán, Jeferson Collazos and Juan Pablo Vergara, who were absolute regulars in the excellent season, got involved in a car accident on the drive from Puno to Juliaca . All three were taken to the local hospital and while the Colombians Millán and Collazos were able to leave the clinic after a few hours with minor injuries, a broken rib caused internal bleeding in Vergara's liver. Before midnight, the club confirmed the death of the 34-year-old winger on social media . The very next day, Binacional resumed training at the request of the players who wanted to win the championship in Vergara's honor.

The final first leg was played six days later in their own stadium and won an impressive 4-1, with the recovered Donald Millán becoming the match winner with one goal and two assists. The second leg at the Estadio Alejandro Villanueva lost 2-0 a week later. The result was enough to win the first championship title in the club's history.

present

After the surprising win of the championship title, some important top performers such as Donald Millán, Jeferson Collazos, Édson Aubert or Hervé Kambou left the club to compete Peruvian clubs at the turn of the year 2019/20 . In return, you could strengthen the squad with the national goalkeeper Raúl Fernández , the former top talent Reimond Manco and the experienced legionnaires Nery Bareiro , Johan Arango and Sebastián Gularte and some loan players.

In the group stage of the Copa Libertadores 2020 you were drawn into a group with the financially much stronger River Plate and FC São Paulo as well as the equal LDU Quito . The first game was won at home against São Paulo 2-1. The second group game ended with an 8-0 away defeat against River Plate and was also one of the biggest defeats in the history of the competition.

Since its inception, Binacional has worn completely sky-blue jerseys in home games, while a darker blue is used in away games. The logo consists of the club crest, which is made up of two. In the lower half a sun and the waves of Lake Titicaca are shown. The coat of arms of the Puno region can be seen in the upper half. During the time when Binacional was playing in Arequipa, the coat of arms of the Arequipa region was shown instead . To the right and left of the club's coat of arms there are two pumas standing on their hind legs and a soccer ball and three stars above the coat of arms.
