Career

societies

El Shenawy began his youth career with his hometown club El Hamool before moving to El Ahly Cairo in 2002 at the age of 14 . He did not manage to assert himself in the first team, which is why he was dismissed from the club. After his release, he moved to league rivals Tala'ea El-Gaish SC . During his time at El-Gaish, El Shenawy was also on loan from Harras El Hodoud .

El Shenawy moved to Petrojet in 2013 . In the 2015/16 season he played 22 games, including eleven games without conceding goals, seven of which were consecutive without conceding. Through this form his youth club El Ahly became aware of him again.

He returned to El Ahly in July 2016, beating Sherif Ekramy on the first team, having conceded five clean sheets in seven games in January 2018. In his first two seasons, El Shenawy contributed to two championships in the Egyptian Premier League.

National team

From 2013 he received several appearances for the Egyptian senior team after making his international debut in a 2-1 loss to Portugal .

In May 2018 he was appointed to Egypt's provisional squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia . He played in friendly matches against Colombia and Belgium before the tournament and was called into the starting line-up in the game against Uruguay . He was named man of match after making multiple saves during the 1-0 defeat. After the game, however, he turned down the award because Budweiser sponsored it and was therefore only photographed with the award. As a Muslim, El Shenawy is forbidden to drink alcohol. His teammates tried to persuade him to accept the award, but he stuck to his decision. However, the club was eliminated from the competition after the group stage.
