The Desaguadero district is located in the Chucuito Province in the Puno region in southern Peru . The district has an area of ​​178.21 km². The 2017 census counted 13,787 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 7282, in 2007 it was 20,009. The administrative seat of the district is the 3832  m high small town Desaguadero with 8502 inhabitants (as of 2017). Desaguadero is located at the outflow of the Desaguadero River from Lake Titicaca . On the opposite bank of the river, in Bolivia , is the city of the same name, Desaguadero . The Río Ccallaccame runs along the southern district boundary.

On September 15, 2007, a meteorite impact occurred 11 km south of the city of Desaguadero .

Geographical location

The Desaguadero district is located in the Altiplano on the southwest bank of the Wiñaymarka qucha (Lago Huiñaymarca), the southern section of Lake Titicaca in the east of the Chucuito province. The Río Desaguadero flows along the eastern district boundary to the Laguna Aguallamaya.

The Desaguadero District borders on the Kelluyo District in the southwest and the Zepita District in the northwest . In the east, the district borders on the municipality of Desaguadero and in the southeast on the municipality of San Andrés de Machaca (both in the Bolivian province of Ingavi in the La Paz department ).
