The Río Desaguadero ( Spanish for "drainage river") is the main river of the Bolivian Altiplano highlands.
location
Near the border town of Desaguadero at (16 ° 33 '51 "S, 69 ° 02' 09" W) the Río Desaguadero drains Lake Titicaca as the only outflow and discharges 5-10% of the lake's excess water, the remaining 90-95% evaporates . In this way, the Río Desaguadero prevents major fluctuations in the lake level.
The river has a length of 383 km and flows from Lake Titicaca in a southeastern direction. On its way it takes in various smaller tributaries, the most important of which is the Río Mauri .
The Río Desaguadero flows into Lake Poopó at (18 ° 27 'S, 67 ° 04' W) after having previously flowed through Lake Uru-Uru .
Water flow
The water flow of the Río Desaguadero depends on the amount of precipitation on Lake Titicaca. In the long-term mean, the evaporation loss of the lake is given as 436 m³ / s and the excess amount released to the Río Desaguadero as 35 m³ / s. The Río Desaguadero is the most important water dispenser for agriculture in the arid climate of the Altiplano and is mainly used for irrigation in the northern part.
