The Estadio Gran Parque Central , or Parque Central for short , is a football stadium in the Uruguayan capital, Montevideo . The facility, which opened on May 25, 1900, hosted the first game in the history of the World Cup in 1930 . The South American Football Championship took place here as early as 1923 and 1924. The Parque Central was initially the home of the German Football Club , but now the multiple world cup winner Nacional Montevideo is based here.

The stadium is located between Carlos Anaya , Jaime Cibils , General Urquiza and Comandante Braga streets in the La Blanqueada district . After an expansion costing 25 million US dollars , the stadium has offered a total of 34,000 spectator seats since October 2018.

history

In 1900, the German football club, a founding member of the national football association in the same year, was given part of the Parque Central in Montevideo as a sports field by the German tram company Transátlantica . Next to it was a so-called international square that was used, for example, by British seafarers during their stay in Montevideo, and from which later, with the inclusion of the DFK site, the Parque Central stadium of today's top club Nacional developed.

The DFK played its first game here on May 25, 1900 against the Central Uruguay Railway Cricket Club (CURCC), from which the later World Cup winner CA Peñarol emerged . Only two days later Nacional played the first game in its club history against the DFK in Parque Central - the teams parted with a 1-1 draw.

The Copa America was held in the sports complex in 1923 and 1924, and the hosts were the winners. The stadium was both one of the three venues for the 1930 World Cup and the stadium in which the first game in the history of the World Cup, USA versus Belgium (3-0), was played. Over time, the stadium has been renovated a total of three times (1944, 1974 and 2005). Today the 45-time Uruguayan football champion Nacional Montevideo plays his home games here.

In the course of its history, the stadium not only experienced sporting highlights, but was also the scene of a tragic event in Uruguay's football history. So there on the night of March 5, 1918, the then captain of Nacional Montevideo Abdón Porte shot himself in the kick-off circle. In addition, the American rock group Kiss performed there.
