Michael Barakowski (born December 23, 1954 in East Berlin ; † January 18, 2018 in Magdeburg ) was a German musician , composer and producer of up- and- coming bands.

Life

Barakowski grew up in the GDR . He completed an apprenticeship as a cook and learned to play the guitar by himself. During his time in the army he composed his first titles. An application to the “Hanns Eisler” University of Music in Berlin was rejected. He then worked as a driver, messenger and secretary for the members of the band Karat . He later went to Express as a sound engineer . In 1978 he was accepted into the guitar at the Friedrichshain Music School . In 1981 he joined the amateur band Perl, which was founded in 1979 . The breakthrough of this only regionally known band came in 1984 after a complete line-up. Barakowski was the only one left in the band. Joined him:

  • Sven "Svenni" Hertrampf (drums)
  • René "Gniedel" Niederwieser ( vocals , guitar ) and
  • Wieland Apelt (vocals, bass).

The band reached its peak in 1985 with the title Time That Never Passes , selling around 700,000 copies. Then the band broke up for the time being, as Barakowski began his career as a professional musician. He completed his guitar training in 1992; In addition, from 1980 he took singing lessons from Heinz Werner.

Burkhard Lasch (deputy section chairman, text author, artistic and organizational director of the group Smokings ) brought him in early 1986 as the front man of the newly founded band Smokings Rockshow , together with Marion Sprawe von Juckreiz . 1986 Lasch left the GDR, which meant the end of the band.

Barakowski called his band from then on Barakowski and friends . Band members were:

  • Michael Otter (guitar)
  • Uwe Karsten (bass)
  • Karsten Lipsius (drums) and
  • Alexander Kirfe (keyboard, saxophone ).

Henning Protzmann , formerly Karat, was the band's artistic director. Tours to the Soviet Union , Poland , Hungary and a GDR tour with Ralf "Bummi" Bursy followed .

In 1990 Barakowski took part under the name Kennzeichen D as the first and only GDR citizen in the all-German preliminary round of the Grand Prix d'Eurovision de la Chanson . He took eighth place with the title Together again . In the same year he was the singer of the band Prinzip , which broke up shortly afterwards.

After 1990 he was the producer of several up-and-coming bands , wrote titles for various artists and worked closely with the Klaus Lage Band . In 2004 Perl reunited as PERL feat. Michael Barakowski.

Barakowski died on January 18, 2018 of multiple organ failure .
