Express , sometimes called Express , was a German rock band from East Berlin .

history

The band was founded in 1972 as an amateur band . She gained first notoriety through her appearances at the Xth World Festival of Youth and Students in 1973 in East Berlin. At the 1974 Workers' Festival in Erfurt , the band was awarded a gold medal and the special prize for successful original compositions. In the same year she received the title of “Excellent Amateur Dance Orchestra”.

In the mid-1970s, the band achieved their greatest success. Titles like Ein Wigwam are in Babelsberg , Bedtime , Petrus turn off the sun , Sometimes two lives meet and When musicians drive home, they made it to the top of the charts on GDR radio . The first single was produced and appearances on the television programs Schlagerstudio and around followed. In 1976 the band completed their first international tour on the Druzhba route to the Soviet Union . At the beginning of August 1976 Express represented the GDR together with the band Magdeburg at the Popsession '76 in Sopot . In the 1980s, Express stayed in the Czechoslovakia very often and became one of the most successful foreign rock bands there.

The head of the band, which became a professional formation in 1975, was Ernst Ernie Lemke. He remained the only constant in the frequently changing line-up. Lemke wrote the music; the texts were mainly from Kurt Demmler . The sound of the band changed as the band changed. While the pieces were initially characterized by song-like rock music, the country influence could not be ignored in 1977 with the use of a violin (Lemke) and the new singer Peter Tschernig . In 1978 Tschernig started a solo career as a country musician. After Rainer Nawrath, Lutz Forstbauer and Wolf Dieter Binge joined the band in the same year , the sound , which was based on the Scorpions , Bryan Adams and Europe , became significantly harder. In the course of the change in the GDR, the band broke up.
