The Campeonato Sudamericano of 1923 was the seventh game of the South American continental championship in football and took place from October 29 to December 2, 1923 for the second time in Uruguay. Four countries took part in this tournament again because Chile waived.

As before, the championship was held in the league system ( everyone against everyone ). If there was a tie in first place, a playoff was planned. All games were played in the capital Montevideo in Parque Central . At that time the stadium held around 22,000 spectators. The tournament was also considered a qualification for the 1924 Olympic football tournament in Paris .

Uruguay became South American champions - and Olympic participants - for the fourth time.

Uruguay convinced at this "Copa" with their strong combination game. Uruguay emerged victorious in all three games. Only against Brazil did you have some problems; in the quasi-final against Argentina, however, they dominated from the start. In the ranks of the Urus , the then 22-year-old José Leandro Andrade played for the first time at the “Copa”. A year later he would become the outstanding player of the Olympic football tournament in Paris and was nicknamed “ La Maravilla Negra ” (“The black Miracle ”) received.

Argentina could not win again against the "Urus" and therefore had to be content with second place. At the start, the Argentines had defeated Paraguay in the most dramatic and highest-scoring game of this championship and caught up three times before they scored the decisive goal. The duel against the Brazilians was also very close; after two quick goals on both sides at the beginning of the game, the Argentines only managed the decisive goal in the closing stages.

Paraguay did not disappoint as the reigning runner-up despite two defeats. A victory against Argentina would have been possible with a little more concentration. At least they managed to get their revenge on the Brazilians, who were defeated in the decider last year .

Brazil 1889Brazil Brazil
Nelson Purchio (goalkeeper, CR Vasco da Gama ), Alemão Sylvio Serpa ( Botafogo FR ), Amaro Silveira (Goytacaz FC), Dino I Antonio Dino Galvão ( CR Flamengo ), Mário Seixas ( Americano FC (RJ) ), Mica Alfreido Pereira de Mello (Botafogo Bahia), Luis Ferreira Nesi (São Critóvão FC), Nilo Braga (Brasil Rio de Janeiro), Paschoal Silva (CR Vasco da Gama), Orlando Pennaforte de Araujo (CR Flamengo), Soda Cleobulo Faría (Americano FC ( RJ)), Zeze José Guimarães ( Fluminense FC ).
Coach: Ary de Almeida Rego
Brazil once again showed that it can only keep up with the big players in front of a home crowd. There was nothing to win for the defending champion at this "Copa". Three losses in three games were a disappointment. However, all three matches were relatively close, so on closer inspection you shouldn't speak of a disaster for the Brazilians.
