The 1959 Campeonato Sudamericano was the 27th edition of the South American continental football championship and took place for the second time in Ecuador from December 5th to 25th. For the first and only time in history, a second competition took place that same year after the Copa, which was held in Argentina in March of that year. Bolivia , Chile , Colombia , Peru and Venezuela did not participate. Brazil entered without their 58 world champions with a selection from the state of Pernambuco , consisting exclusively of players from Sport , Santa Cruz and Náutico from Recife .

The tournament was played as before in the league system (everyone against everyone). If there was a tie in first place, a playoff was planned. All games were played at the Estadio Modelo in Guayaquil. As in previous tournaments, some games were played one after the other as part of a double event on one day.

Second South American champion in football 1959 was unbeaten for the tenth time Uruguay.
