Mario Bergara , full name Mario Ludovico Bergara , (born December 1, 1937 in Montevideo , † February 28, 2001 ) was a Uruguayan football player .

Player career

society

The 1.72 meter tall, Mariolo called offensive player Bergara played at least from 1956 to 1957 and from 1959 to 1960 in Montevideo for racing in the Primera División . There he was the team's outstanding player. He was then a member of the Nacionals squad from 1961 to 1967 . With the commitment of Zezé Moreira as a coach, Bergara experienced his best career phase there from 1963. In 1963 and 1966 he won the Uruguayan championship with the Bolsos . In 1964 Nacional took part in the finals of the Copa Campeones de América , in which the Uruguayan club ultimately had to hand over the trophy to the Argentine representative Independiente . Bergara played in the final first leg from the start. At the end of his career, he was also active for the Montevideo Wanderers from 1967 to 1968 . There he was in the two second division seasons, in which the club narrowly failed to rise, alongside Julio Toja formative figure of the game of the Montevideans. In 1968 he returned to racing for two years. At that time he resumed his studies at the university. After his career, he worked on the Nacionals Finance Committee at the time of President Dante Iocco .

National team

Bergara was also a member of the senior national team of Uruguay , for which he completed 15 international matches between December 7, 1959 and December 4, 1965. He scored six international goals. With the Celeste he took part in the second game of the South American Championship in Ecuador in December of that year in 1959 , in which he contributed to the Uruguayans' title win in four matches. With the four goals scored by Bergara, he was the most successful Uruguayan goalscorer of the tournament. He also participated in the 1962 World Cup on the Uruguayan side. There he was used in the group games that were lost 3-1 against Yugoslavia .
