Joseph Zhu Baoyu

Joseph Zhu Baoyu ( Chinese  朱寶玉 ; born July 2, 1921 in Henan ; † May 7, 2020 in Nanyang , Henan Province) was a Chinese clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Nanyang .

Life

Joseph Zhu Baoyu grew up as a half-orphan in the Jingang Orphanage. He received the sacrament of baptism at the age of eight. In 1946 he began studying theology at the Kaifeng Seminary in Henan Province. In 1957 he was ordained a priest by Peter Joseph Fan Xueyan , Bishop of Baoding. He was active in pastoral care in Nanyang. In 1964, because of his belief, he was sentenced to work in a forced labor camp in Xihua by the communist regime. From 1967 he was again secretly active as a pastor in the Pushan community.

In November 1981, he led a group of pilgrims from Nanyang to the Sheshan Basilica . The Chinese authorities later arrested him and accused him of causing unrest. In 1982 he and twenty priests and hundreds of nuns were sentenced to imprisonment and "re-education work" for counterrevolutionary activities and were not released until 1988.

Between 1988 and 1992 he served in various parishes and was ordained auxiliary bishop of the diocese of Nanyang on March 19, 1995 on the occasion of the feast of St. Joseph, his patron saint. The consecration ceremony was presided over by Bishop Joseph Jin Dechen ; the concelebrants were Zhang Huaixin , Bishop of Jixian, and Shi Jingxian , Bishop of Shangqiu. In 2002 he was appointed bishop of Nanyang, as a member of the underground church . 2010 was his resignation from Pope Benedict XVI. granted and ignored by the Chinese government. On June 30, 2011 he was officially recognized as a bishop.

Joseph Zhu Baoyu died in May 2020 at the age of 99 after surviving a COVID-19 illness in February 2020. He was considered the oldest patient in China to date to have recovered from the coronavirus.
