The Copa Libertadores 1971 was the 12th edition of the most important South American football competition for club teams. 21 teams took part. The national champions of the CONMEBOL countries and the second took part, or the winners and finalists of the cup competitions in Brazil and Bolivia, since there have not yet been any national championships. The field of participants was completed by defending champion Estudiantes de La Plata. The tournament began on January 29th and ended on June 9th, 1971 with the final playoff. The Uruguayan representative Nacional Montevideo won the final against Estudiantes de La Plata and won this competition for the first time.
