Luis Ubiña (born June 7, 1940 in Cerro , Montevideo , † July 17, 2013 ) was a Uruguayan football player .

Club career

The El Peta called Ubiña was in montevideanischen Barrio born Cerro and started in the youth teams of Club Atlético Cerro playing football. At the age of 15 he then moved to the Rampla Juniors , where he finally made his debut in the Primera División . In 1964 he was with that club Uruguayan runner-up. In 1967 he then joined Nacional . He played there until 1974 and was able to win the Uruguayan national championship title four times with his team (1969, 1970, 1971, 1972). He also celebrated winning the Copa Libertadores title with Nacional in 1971 and also won the World Cup that year. A year later, his club also secured the Copa Interamericana . At least during the time of the Copa Libertadores triumph, Ubiña acted as captain of the team.

National team

The defender was a member of the Uruguayan national soccer team , with which he participated in the 1966 Soccer World Cup and the 1970 tournament and played the respective World Cup qualifying rounds for the 1966, 1970 and 1974 World Cups. In total, he completed 33 international matches for his home country from his debut on January 3, 1965 to his last appearance on July 8, 1973, in which he hit the opposing goal once.

After the career

In 1974 Ubiña ended his active career and was hired by Nacionals then club president Miguel Restuccia for another job in Parque Central . Later he also worked as president of the Mutual Uruguaya de Futbolers Profesionales and was administrator of the Parque Central . In 2002 Ubiña was dismissed in the course of cost-cutting measures from his former club. Suffering from leg health problems caused by cigar consumption, he now lives with his wife and mother-in-law in his home in Cerro and regularly spends time in his summer house in Santa Lucía del Este .
