Juan Carlos Blanco , full name Juan Carlos Blanco Peñalba , (born May 25, 1946 in Dolores , Uruguay ) is a former Uruguayan football player and coach.

Career

Player career

Defensive player "Cacho" Blanco made his debut on March 26, 1966 in the ranks of Nacional Montevideo in a friendly as a right-back against La Luz . From 1967 to 1973 he played for Nacional in the Primera División . In the 1969 , 1970 and 1971 seasons, his club won the Uruguayan Championship. In 1971 they also won the Copa Libertadores . Blanco played in all three final games against Estudiantes de La Plata from the start. In December of the same year, he and his club as a player on the starting line-up ultimately prevailed in both games against Panathinaikos Athens for the 1971 World Cup and won this title. Also in the second leg for the Copa Interamericana 1972 against CD Cruz Azul , he contributed to the triumph in this competition with a use in the starting XI. In 1973 he moved to Spain to Real Saragossa and completed 104 league games (no goal) in the five seasons including the 1977/78 season. At the Copa del Generalísimo 1976 he reached the final with Saragossa, in which they were defeated 0-1 against Atlético Madrid . In 1978 he returned to Nacional Montevideo and was there under contract until 1982. In the 1980 season he was again Uruguayan champion with the "Bolsos". In 1980 they also won the Copa Libertadores . Blanco played in both finals against SC Internacional from the start. With a 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest on February 11, 1981 , in which he was again in the starting line-up, he won the 1980 World Cup with his club . He also came to the train in all three matches for the Copa Interamericana 1981 . However, Nacional lost to the Mexican club UNAM Pumas . For Nacional he ran between 1970 and 1981 in a total of 44 games of the Copa Libertadores (24 wins, 11 draws, 9 defeats). In 1982 he left the "Bolsos" and joined the then second division Racing , for which he was active until 1983. He ended his playing career after last playing alongside his son Leonardo for Nacional Universitario in 1985 . Blanco also played for Club Atlético San Salvador .

National team

Blanco was a member of the senior national team of Uruguay , for which he completed ten international matches between July 14, 1971 and September 13, 1981. He did not score an international goal. With the Celeste he played the Copa Newton and the Copa Lipton in 1971 . He also got a chance to qualify for the 1982 World Cup .

Coaching

After the end of his playing career, he was assistant coach to Ildo Maneiro at Danubio FC in 1988 , who became Uruguayan champions that year. Later he coached the youth team Nacionals, the so-called Formativas. In 1990 he took over from Saúl Rivero as a coach in the first division team and looked after the team for the first time on December 20, 1990 against Racing. In 1991 he won the Liguilla Pre-Libertadores with the team and was second in the Primera División. That year his coaching engagement with the Montevideans ended. In 2005 he was in charge of the Paysandú Fútbol Club . In January 2013 Eduardo Ache brought him back to Nacional Montevideo as a sports advisor. From March 4, 2013 to March 28, 2013 Blanco worked alongside Gustavo Bueno as an interim trainer.
