Néstor Rubén Togneri (born November 27, 1942 in San Martín , Buenos Aires ; † December 8, 1999 ibid) was an Argentine soccer player who won the Copa Libertadores three times in a row at club level with Estudiantes de La Plata between 1968 and 1970 . He also took part in the 1974 World Cup in Germany with the national team of his home country .

Career

Club career

Néstor Togneri was born on November 27, 1942 in San Martín , a town in the province of Buenos Aires . He started playing football in the direct vicinity at Club Atlético Platense , where he was accepted into the first team in 1964 at the age of 22. From then on, Togneri played for three years for Platense, which was then in the top Argentinian league, and brought it to 92 league games with one goal.

For the 1968 season Néstor Togneri changed the club for the first time and then played for Estudiantes de La Plata . At Estudiantes he was part of the club's team that - eligible to start as the Argentine champion in 1967 - advanced to the final of the Copa Libertadores after a semi-final victory over the Racing Club . There the team of coach Osvaldo Zubeldía showed themselves to players like Carlos Bilardo and Juan Ramón Verón against Palmeiras São Paulo with 2-0 in the playoff and brought the Copa Libertadores to La Plata for the first time ever . By winning the Copa Libertadores you were also eligible to participate in the game for the World Cup . There they got the upper hand with 1-0 and 1-1 against the English representative and winner of the European Cup of National Champions 1967/68 , Manchester United . While Néstor Togneri was only a substitute player in the finals of the Copa Libertadores 1968 , he was already a regular in the World Cup games and thus had a not to be despised part of this success.

As defending champion, Estudiantes was also qualified for the Copa Libertadores 1969 , prevailed there in the semifinals against the Chilean club Universidad Católica and was thus again in the final, where this time as opponent Nacional Montevideo from Uruguay was waiting. With 1-0 and 2-0, Zubeldía's team prevailed and were able to defend the previous year's success. Néstor Togneri was used in both finals over the entire season. In the subsequent World Cup match , however, things did not go so well, they were defeated by AC Milan with 0: 3 and 2: 1.

Also in the Copa Libertadores 1970 Estudiantes de La Plata was very successful again. After a semi-final triumph over CA River Plate , they met again in the final against a team from Uruguay, this time against record champions CA Peñarol . After a 1: 0 win in the home match at Estadio Jorge Luis Hirschi the team handed to players like Carlos Bilardo, Jorge Solari or Rubén Pagnanini a goalless draw in the return leg in Montevideo in order for the third time in a row the most important competition for club teams in South America win to be able to. This title was also the last major success of the Estudiantes team at the end of the 1960s. After losing to Feyenoord Rotterdam in the World Cup and no further championship could be celebrated in the league since 1967, the winning streak in the Libertadores Cup in the 1971 edition also ended when the Nacional Montevideo final was too big a hurdle. A year earlier, the successful coach Zubeldía had announced his departure from La Plata.

Néstor Togneri played in the jersey of Estudiantes de La Plata until 1975 and made a total of 261 league games with five goals during his time in Estudiantes. In 1975 he left the club and joined Quilmes AC for a year , where he played 46 league games without a goal and then ended his active career at the age of 34.

National team

In 1974 Néstor Togneri made an international match for the Argentine national soccer team . He was appointed to the South American squad for the 1974 World Cup in Germany by national coach Vladislao Cap . However, Togneri was not used in the tournament. The Argentine team, meanwhile, reached the second group stage, but then retired there last behind the Netherlands , Brazil and the GDR without a win.
