In 1950 the career of "Served" Luis Artime began in his hometown in the youth department of the Club El Ciclon de Palmira Mendoza. The goal-threatening attacker reached Club Atlético Atlanta in Buenos Aires via the intermediate station CA Independiente Junín at the age of 20 . The real career of the future goalscorer began in the capital. With a quick start, elegant dribbling and precise shots from full speed, he prevailed at Atlanta and scored 25 goals in 30 league games in 1961. This also led to his debut in the Argentine national football team on May 17, 1961. From 1962 "Artillero" went hunting for goals with the "Red Devils" of CA River Plate . Despite his scoring danger, it was only enough to runner-up at River Plate. He was able to celebrate his first championship after moving to CA Independiente in 1967. After a year-long interlude at Palmeiras São Paulo , the goalscorer celebrated his greatest successes at Nacional Montevideo from 1969 . He won the championship three times in a row with Nacional from 1969 to 1971 and secured the top scorer's crown in the Primera División , triumphed with his club in the 1971 Copa Libertadores and also prevailed in the World Cup against the Greeks from Panathinaikos Athens in December 1971 . In Athens, Artime scored a 1-1 draw and on December 29, Nacional won 2-1 at the Estadio Centenario with two goals from striker Artime with 2-1 goals against the team of coach Ferenc Puskás . In 1974 Luis Artime ended his successful career in his home with Rosario.
National team (1961–1967)
At the 1966 World Cup , he became Argentina's most effective striker. Luis Artime had just been sorted out at CA River Plate after a complicated broken leg and the resulting long injury failure and difficult form building and switched to CA Independiente. In England, however, he found his old strength and impressed in the attack of the team of coach Juan Carlos Lorenzo . In the first round match against Spain on July 13th at Villa Park in Birmingham, he scored both goals for a 2-1 win. With goalkeeper José Iribar and central defenders Ignacio Zoco and Francisco Gallego playing internationally recognized experts on the Spanish defense , his performance in the first group game was remarkable.
Three days later, on July 16, he was unable to prevail against the German central defense with Vorstopper Wolfgang Weber and cleaner Willi Schulz . The game ended 0-0. In the last group game against Switzerland in Sheffield, Artime scored the 1-0 lead in a 2-0 win. With a 0-1 win against eventual world champions England , Argentina was eliminated in the quarter-finals in front of 90,584 spectators at Wembley Stadium. Goalkeeper Gordon Banks and the long Jack Charlton in conjunction with Bobby Moore prevented more goals from Artime , mainly in the team of coach Alf Ramsey .
In January / February 1967 , the center forward and his team came second in the South American Cup . With five goals in five games, he took the top scorer's crown. In the decisive game for the title, the outstanding Uruguayan goalkeeper Ladislao Mazurkiewicz prevented Artime goals. He completed a total of 25 international matches and scored 24 goals.
