The Copa Libertadores 1998 , from this year also Copa Toyota Libertadores due to the sponsorship of the car manufacturer Toyota , was the 39th edition of the most important South American football competition for club teams. 21 teams took part, including the national champions of the nine best CONMEBOL countries and the runner-up as well as two representatives from Mexico and Venezuela, who determined two remaining places in the qualification. Defending champion Cruzeiro Belo Horizonte completed the field of participants . The tournament began on February 25th and ended on August 26th, 1998 with the final second leg. The Brazilian representative CR Vasco da Gama won the final against Barcelona Sporting Club and thus the Copa Libertadores for the first time .
