Career

society

Gustavo Méndez began his career in 1990 in his hometown with Nacional Montevideo , for whose team he played five years in the Uruguayan league. With the Uruguayan championship in 1992 with Nacional, he won his first title. Shortly thereafter, the then Italian first division club Vicenza Calcio became aware of the defender and signed him. In his first season with Vicenza he reached ninth place in Serie A and in the following year the national cup competition, the Coppa Italia , could be won. The following two years with Vicenza were less successful.

In the 1997-98 season the league succeeded with only one point ahead of relegated Brescia Calcio but had the following year as the second last of the transition into the series B be commenced. Mendéz then left the club and joined Torino Calcio . In the 1999/2000 season the defender was relegated to the second division with Torino, and a year later he was directly promoted again. In 2002, the Uruguayan returned to his homeland and signed with Nacional Montevideo, which he had already belonged to at the beginning of his career. He won the championship twice with the team in 2002 and 2005 before ending his active career.

National team

In 1993 Mendéz received the first bids in the national team and finally made his debut on August 29, 1993 in the World Cup qualifier against Venezuela for the Uruguayan selection . The defender missed participation in the 1994 World Cup after losing the last qualifying match against Brazil against Uruguay . A year later he took part in the Copa America with Uruguay and surprisingly won the penalty shootout competition after beating Brazil in the final. In the following years he ran in four games in 1997 at the Confederations Cup and reached fourth place with the selection. With the Uruguayan national team, he had not been able to qualify for the finals of the 1998 World Cup . For the following soccer World Cup in 2002 it was possible to secure qualification for the final round before Colombia tied on points. The defender was used in the first group game against Denmark, could not prevent the 1: 2 defeat and was eliminated as third in the group with two points from the tournament. This mission, dated June 1, 2002, was also the last of his 46 international matches. He did not score a goal in the course of his national team career.
