The 1997 Copa Libertadores was the 38th edition of the most important South American football competition for club teams. 21 teams took part, including the national champions of the CONMEBOL countries and the second. The field of participants was completed by defending champion CA River Plate . The tournament began on February 19 and ended on August 13, 1997 with the final second leg. The Brazilian representative Cruzeiro Belo Horizonte won the final against Sporting Cristal and thus the Copa Libertadores for the second time .
