Paulo Autuori de Mello or Paulo Autuori for short (born August 15, 1956 in Rio de Janeiro ) is a Brazilian football coach . Since 2018 he has headed Fluminense FC in Rio de Janeiro as CEO.

Coaching career

Autuori got into the coaching business early on. He previously graduated from the Universidade Castelo Branco with a degree in sport . He took other sports-based subjects at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro and the Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro . His first coaching post was in 1975, at the age of 24, with AA Portuguesa (RJ) . After four years of experience there, he moved to America FC (RJ) in 1979 . Two seasons later, he was hired by EC São Bento before the football coach came to Botafogo FR , his most important position to date, via the stations Marília AC and Bonsucesso FC in 1986 . In the same year, Autuori moved to other European countries, where he was coach of Vitória Guimarães . He led the team to a surprising third place at the end of the season, behind Benfica Lisbon and FC Porto . With Paulinho Cascavel , he also had the most accurate attacker in the league on his team. In the 1986/87 UEFA Cup , he led the team to the quarter-finals, where they were eliminated by Borussia Mönchengladbach after 3-0 and 2-2. For Vitória this was the best result in this competition in the club's history. Although Autuori performed well, the two sides separated again in the summer of 1987 and Autuori signed with Nacional Funchal , who were playing second-rate at the time . The coach led the team to second place and helped her move up to the Primeira Divisão . In 1988/89 the club played for the first time in the highest Portuguese football league. The Brazilian placed his team in tenth place at the end of the season and thus safely managed to stay in the league. His performance sparked new desires at his old club Vitória Guimarães, so that he then signed for the second time in the summer of 1989. 1989/90 he led Vitória in fourth place in the league. The following year it went worse and the team only found themselves in the middle of the table. So in 1991 Autuori moved back to Funchal, where he accepted the post of coach at Marítimo Funchal . He led the club to a successful time in the following years. They never did worse than seventh place and with fifth place in 1993 and 1994 they managed the best season finale in the club's history. Thus, the club qualified for the first time in 1993/94 for the UEFA Cup, where they were then eliminated in the first round 2-0 and 2-2 against Royal Antwerp . In the 1994/95 UEFA Cup , the team only failed in round two against the later finalists Juventus Turin . In the same year the team moved to the final of the Taça de Portugal , where the final on June 10, 1995 was lost 2-0 to Sporting Lisbon .

After the end of the season, Autuori moved back to Brazil, where he looked after Botafogo FR for a short time and won the national championship with them . For the 1996/97 season he returned to Portugal, where the coach was signed for the first time at one of the country's big clubs, the capital city of Benfica, Lisbon . There he replaced Mário Wilson . But after Autuori had not met the club's requirements, his predecessor also became his successor. In the same year he was head coach at Cruzeiro Belo Horizonte . With these he won the state championship of Minas Gerais and then led them to the final of the Copa Libertadores . After 0-0 and 0-1 against the Peruvian representative Sporting Cristal , the competition was won. The shooter of the Golden Gate on August 13, 1997 was Elivelton . In the following four years Autuori looked after a total of nine clubs, but without being successful. In 2002 he came to Peru, among other places, where he briefly looked after the team that he defeated in the 1995 Copa Libertadores final with Cruzeiro. With Sporting Cristal he finally won the Primera División Peruana , which he was able to win with Alianza Lima last year . In 2003 Autuori became national coach for the first time and took over this position in the Peruvian national team . He then looked after them at the Copa América 2004 in his own country. Although he led the team to the quarter-finals, he was eliminated there against Argentina . In April 2005 he turned his back on the Peruvian Federation and took over for Émerson Leão at São Paulo FC , with whom he should reach the final of the Copa Libertadores for the second time in his coaching career. The opponent this time was league competitor Athletico Paranaense . After a 1-1 draw at the Estádio Beira-Rio , the FC won the second leg with a clear 4-0 win. Márcio Amoroso , Fabão , Luizão and Diego Tardelli were the goalscorers for São Paulo. With this success, the team was eligible to take part in the 2005 FIFA Club World Cup . The club also secured this after victories against al-Ittihad and Liverpool FC . Mineiro was the scorer in the 1-0 final win over Liverpool on December 18, 2005 .

On December 29, 2005, eleven days after winning the FIFA Club World Cup, Autuori announced that he would be joining the Kashima Antlers in Japan . There he replaced the successful coach Toninho Cerezo . After a season without success, he was hired for the third time by Cruzeiro Belo Horizonte for the 2007 season. In the same year he moved to the Al-Rayyan Sports Club in Qatar. After two years without a title, he moved to Gremio Porto Alegre , but soon afterwards he returned to Al-Rayyan. In 2009 he and his team reached the final of the Emir of Qatar Cup , but had to admit defeat to Al-Gharafa 1: 2. The following year, the club managed to move into the final again. This time Autuori and his team had the upper hand and won 1-0 against Umm-Salal Sport Club .

After a temporary engagement in Qatar's Olympic selection, Autuoris took over the Qatari national soccer team as the new head coach on February 18, 2012 , but was dismissed after only 11 months in mid-January 2013.
