The Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro ( Portuguese : Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro ), in short: PUC-Rio, is a Brazilian university under papal law . The campus is located in Gavea in the south of the city.

The university was founded on October 30, 1940.

The university is a privately funded non-profit organization of the Roman Catholic Church ; The sponsor is the Archdiocese of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro and the Society of Jesus .
