Roberto Júnior Fernández , also called Gatito Fernández , full name Roberto Júnior Fernández Torres , (born March 29, 1988 in Asunción ) is a Paraguayan football player .

Career

society

The 1.91 meter tall goalkeeper Fernández played in 2006 in the youth division of Club Cerro Porteño . From 2007 to 2009 he was part of the professional team. In the 2009 season he came there to 22 first division appearances. In 2009, his club won the Torneo Apertura of the Primera División . In July 2009, Júnior Fernández moved to Argentina to Estudiantes de La Plata . In mid-July 2010 he joined the Racing Club from Avellaneda in Argentina, trained by Miguel Angel Russo , on a loan deal . For the club, where he played a total of 15 top division games, he made his debut in the championship in a 1-0 home win on August 8, 2010 against the All Boys . In early August 2011 he was loaned to FC Utrecht in the Netherlands .

Shortly after his arrival at Utrecht , the player suffered an injury to the medial meniscus , so that he missed the start of the season. He played his first game in the Eredivisie on October 22, 2011 against SC Heerenveen . Against Utrecht he won back payment of his salary. He had had to undertake to cede part of his official salary to a third party, who returned the money to Utrecht . The club wanted to circumvent the legal minimum wage for foreign players. After the end of the season he returned to Paraguay and rejoined his old youth club Cerro Porteño .

At Cerro Porteño, Júnior Fernández made his debut at international club level. In the Copa Sudamericana 2012 he played on August 30, 2012 against AC Mineros de Guayana . Júnior Fernández stayed at the club until 2014, when he went to Brazil for EC Vitória . His first game in the top Brazilian division played Júnior Fernández on August 24, 2014. In the game against Figueirense FC , he was substituted on after half-time for Wilson . At the end of the season he had to relegate to the B series with the club as seventeenth in the table . Vitória succeeded in direct promotion, but Júnior Fernández switched to league rivals Figueirense FC at the start of the 2016 season. After his club had to relegate at the end of the 2016 season , Júnior Fernández moved to promoted Botafogo FR in November 2016 .

National team

With the U-20 selection , Júnior Fernández took part in the U-20 South American Football Championship in 2007 . With the A selection of the national team, he has played four games so far. He was also part of the team that was runner-up at the 2011 Copa America , but was not used here. He acted as the goalkeeper at the Copa America 2019 .
