The Associação Atlética Portuguesa , in lists often Portuguesa-RJ , otherwise often called Portuguesa Carioca , is a Brazilian football club from the Ilha do Governador - there is also the international airport - in Rio de Janeiro . He currently plays in the fourth and lowest division of the Brazilian championship.

history

The club was founded by a group of business people from Rio after they played a game against the local AA Portuguesa as an amateur squad during a business trip in Santos . In Rio, the club only played a subordinate role throughout its history. One of the memorable events in the club's early history was a 2-1 win against Real Madrid on September 4, 1969 at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu during a European tour.

In the state championship in Rio de Janeiro, the club regularly commutes between the first and second division. Winning the state cup, the Copa Rio 2000, was not yet linked to any qualification for further competitions. Only thanks to the renewed entry into the 2015 cup final can the club take part in the Brazilian national championship for the first time in the Série D for the 2016 season because the final winner Resende FC will take part in the Copa do Brasil .

In 2016, Portuguesa reached the Rio Cup final again and lost it after a 2: 3 and 4: 3 in the decisive penalty game 3: 4 on October 22, 2016 against Friburguense AC . However, the club took legal action against this rating because Friburguense had used an unregistered player in the final first leg. The sports court approved the complaint on October 28th and Friburguense revoked the victory in favor of Portuguesa.
