Lajos Baróti [ ˈlɒjoʃ ˈbɒroːti ] (born  August 19, 1914 in Szeged , †  December 23, 2005 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian football player and coach. With a total of eleven important titles, he is one of the most important coaches of his time.

career

Lajos Baróti played for Szeged AK from 1928 to 1946 and for Győri ETO from 1946 to 1948 . Between 1939 and 1941 he was appointed to the Hungarian national football team twice .

In 1957 he took over the post of head coach of the national team. Until 1966 and then again between 1975 and 1978, he supervised the team in a total of 117 international matches. He led the team to soccer world championships four times ( 1958 , 1962 , 1966 , 1978 ). In 1960 at the Olympic Games in Rome and at the European Championships in 1964 , he was third each. At the European Championship, Hungary only lost 2-1 to hosts and tournament winners Spain in extra time in the semi-finals. But he had the greatest success as a national coach at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo , where he won the gold medal.

1971-72 he was also in charge of the Peruvian national soccer team at short notice .

His most successful time as a club coach he spent with Újpesti Dózsa . There he initiated the golden era of the club from 1967 to 1971, in which it dominated the 1970s with the famous attack formation Fazekas - Göröcs - Bene - Dunai II - Zámbó . Under him, Újpest won the championship and cup double in 1969 and 1970, as well as another championship in 1971 - the club's first title in a decade. He also led the team in the finals of the trade fair cup 1968/69 against Newcastle United , but they were lost with 0: 3 and 2: 3.

At club level he also had successes with Vasas Budapest , SSW Innsbruck and Benfica Lisbon , where he won the double in 1981.
