Roberto Carlos Challe Olarte (born November 24, 1946 in Lima ) is a former Peruvian football player and coach. He took part in the Soccer World Cup in Mexico in 1970 .

Career

Player career

Roberto Challe began his football career in 1964 in his hometown of Lima at the local club Centro Iqueño . In 1966 he moved to today's Peruvian record champions Universitario de Deportes , with whom he won the Peruvian championship in 1966, 1967, 1969 and 1971.

He then continued his career at Defensor Lima from the Breña district . With this club he was again Peruvian champion in 1973.

He then joined the Sport Boys from Callao for two years . In 1976 he returned to Lima and played for a year for Sporting Cristal from the Rímac district . After another year at Universitario de Deportes, he moved to Universidad Católica in Ecuador in 1978 . After a season he returned to Lima in 1979, where he joined Deportivo Municipal .

At the end of the 1980 season, he ended his active career as a player after another season at Universitario de Deportes.

National team

Between 1967 and 1973 Roberto Challe played 48 international matches for the Peruvian national soccer team , in which he scored four goals. He was appointed to the Peruvian squad for the 1970 World Cup in Mexico . In this tournament he was used in all preliminary round matches as well as in the 2-4 defeat in the quarter-finals against eventual world champions Brazil . In the 3-0 group game against Morocco in the preliminary round , he scored the goal to make it 2-0.

Coaching career

As a coach, Challe has worked for a variety of Peruvian clubs since the early 1980s, including Juan Aurich , Defensor Lima , León de Huánuco and Deportivo Wanka . Most engagements ended after just one year. He worked several times for some clubs. He coached the Deportivo San Agustín club four times . With Universitario de Deportes , where he was already involved as a player in winning four championship titles, he was also Peruvian champion as a coach in 1999 and 2000.

He looked after the Peruvian national team during qualification for the 1986 World Cup . His team missed direct qualification in the last group game by beating eventual world champions Argentina 2-2 in Buenos Aires . After the elimination in the subsequent play-off games against Chile , Challe's activity as Peruvian national coach ended.
