Hugo Alejandro Sotil Yerén (born May 18, 1949 in Ica ) is a former Peruvian football player .
Career
society
Hugo Sotil moved from youth to the first team of Deportivo Municipal in 1968 . In his first season as a professional player, he was the Segunda División's top scorer with 14 goals and rose with his club to the Primera División .
In 1973 he moved to Europe for FC Barcelona . There he won the first Spanish championship title for “Barça” since 1960, together with players like Johan Cruyff , Carles Rexach and Juan Manuel Asensi .
After four successful years in Barcelona, he returned to Peru. With Alianza Lima he was Peruvian champion in 1977 and 1978.
From 1978 to 1980 he played with moderate success for the Colombian club Independiente Medellín . He returned to his hometown club Deportivo Municipal in 1981, where he ended his professional career in 1982. After that he was active as a player-coach for lower-class clubs until 1986.
National team
Between 1970 and 1978 Hugo Sotil played 62 international matches for the Peruvian national soccer team , in which he scored 18 goals.
When he made his debut on February 24, 1970 in the friendly against Bulgaria in Lima , he scored three goals after being substituted on and played a major role in the Peruvian 5-3 victory after twice leading the Bulgarians. He was then appointed to the Peruvian squad for the 1970 World Cup in Mexico . In this tournament he was used in all preliminary round matches as well as in the 2-4 defeat in the quarter-finals against eventual world champions Brazil .
In 1975 he won the Copa America with the national team . In the playoff against Colombia , he scored the goal for the Peruvians 1-0 victory.
At the Football World Cup in Argentina in 1978 , he was again in the Peruvian squad . In the course of the tournament he was substituted on in the preliminary round games as well as in the game of the intermediate round against Poland .
