Teófilo Cubillas (born March 8, 1949 in Puente Piedra , Lima ) is a former Peruvian football player . In March 2004 he was named to the list of the 125 best footballers still alive ( FIFA 100 ) by Pelé .

Cubillas shaped Peruvian football during the 1970s and was jointly responsible for ensuring that the Peruvian national team qualified for three football world championships.

Tournaments

At the 1970 World Cup in Mexico , Peru played with Germany in a preliminary group and lost 3-1. Peru nevertheless qualified for the quarter-finals with victories over Bulgaria and Morocco . There the future world champion Brazil was the opponent; Peru lost 2-4. Cubillas scored at least one goal in every game in this World Cup and scored a total of five times. In 2006 he was subsequently voted the best young player of the tournament by internet voting.

At the Copa América 1975 Cubillas led Peru to the championship and won his only international title. He scored two goals in the 3-1 semi-final victory over Brazil and was voted Player of the Tournament.

Cubillas led his team as midfield director and top scorer at the 1978 World Cup in Argentina again in the second final round. In the first game, the team defeated the favored Scots 3-1; Cubillas scored two goals. Peru played 0-0 in their second game against eventual runner-up Netherlands . The team then qualified for the next round against Iran 4: 1 after three goals from Cubillas. In the second final round, however, they lost to Brazil, Poland and the eventual world champions Argentina .

At the 1982 World Cup in Spain , Cubillas had already passed its zenith. At first they drew against the newcomer Cameroon and the eventual world champions Italy , but a 1: 5 defeat against Poland meant the early end.

Cubillas ended his career in the North American Soccer League in the mid-1980s . To this day, the Peruvian national team has never again been able to show such successes as during the active time of Cubillas. Together with Miroslav Klose and Thomas Müller, he is the only soccer player to date to have scored at least five goals in two World Cups.
