Miguel Ángel Borja Hernández (short Miguel Borja ; born January 26, 1993 in Tierralta ) is a Colombian football player on the position of a striker . He has been under contract with the Brazilian first division club Palmeiras São Paulo since 2017, and has been on loan with Junior from Barranquilla since 2020 .

Life

Miguel Borja grew up in poor conditions as the youngest brother of eight siblings in Tierralta , Córdoba . In addition to attending school in the evenings, he had to work during the day to help support the family. His first steps as a footballer began in a foundation and in the regional selection of Cordoba. At the initiative of a coach, he introduced himself to various clubs in Medellín and Cali .

Club career

His first stop in professional football was Deportivo Cali , where he only played one game in the Copa Colombia in 2011 . He then moved to Cúcuta Deportivo . There he was only used in a total of five games and was only in the starting line-up once. So in 2012 he moved to the Colombian second division to Cortuluá . There he came more often to missions and drew attention to himself. He first moved to the Colombian first division to La Equidad . There he only played two games, but scored four goals and then moved to Italy . Borja was under contract for a year at AS Livorno but only appeared in eight games without scoring a goal. Therefore, he moved to Argentina in 2014 to Olimpo de Bahía Blanca , where he scored three goals in 16 games in six months. Borja returned to Colombia for the 2015 season. At Independiente Santa Fe he couldn't really assert himself in a year and was often only substituted in or out. But he was involved in winning the Superliga de Colombia and the Copa Sudamericana 2015 .

For the Apertura 2016 Miguel Borja changed again to Cortuluá. There he was able to prevail and was the top scorer in the first Colombian league with a new goal record for short tournaments. He was then signed by the Colombian top club Atlético Nacional , with whom he won the Copa Libertadores and the Copa Colombia directly , was top scorer of the Copa Sudamericana and the Copa Colombia and took part in the 2016 FIFA Club World Cup . At the end of the year, Borja was named South America's Footballer of the Year and South America's Eleven of the Year. Borja was only used in six league games for reasons of rotation, but played an important part in the club's success in other competitions.

In February 2017, Borja signed a five-year contract with the Brazilian club Palmeiras from São Paulo . With Palmeiras, Borja became Brazilian champion and top scorer of the Copa Libertadores in 2018 . In 2020 Borja moved back to Colombia on loan to Junior in Barranquilla .

National team career

Miguel Borja played for the U-20 national team of Colombia and won the U-20 South American Football Championship in 2013 and took part in the U-20 World Cup in Turkey in 2013 . He also took part in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro for Colombia . In 2016 he played for the Colombian national soccer team for the first time and was used in a qualifying match for the 2018 World Cup . Borja scored his first two goals in a friendly against China in November 2017 .

He was part of the Colombian squad at the 2018 World Cup in Russia . He came to a use and retired with the team in the round of 16 against England on penalties.
