Raúl Vicente Amarilla Vera (born June 19, 1960 in Luque , Paraguay ) is a former football player and coach.
Career
Amarilla made his debut for his home club Sportivo Luqueño at the age of 17 . Soon, in 1980 at the age of 20, he moved to Spain for Real Zaragoza . From there he was loaned to Racing Santander for one season . In the 1982/83 season he was the second best shooter in the Spanish league with 19 goals . Between 1982 and 1983 he also played two games for Spain's U-21s , which made it impossible for him to play for the Paraguayan national team. In 1985 he moved to FC Barcelona . Only in the first season he was still part of Barça's starting eleven. In the other two seasons he was only a supplementary player. In 1988 he went back home to Club Olimpia . The second half of 1989 he played on loan at Club América . In 1990 he won the Copa Libertadores , the Supercopa Sudamericana and the Recopa Sudamericana with Club Olimpia . He was also named South America's Footballer of the Year that year . The striker spent the last season of his professional career, 1993/94, in Japan with the Yokohama Wings .
He later coached smaller Paraguayan clubs such as Club Sportivo San Lorenzo and Sportivo Luqueño . At the 2006 World Cup , he worked as Paraguay's assistant coach at Aníbal Ruiz 's side. After Ruiz resigned after the World Cup, Amarilla was the interim coach of Paraguay before Gerardo Martino took over in 2007.
