Cafu (born June 7, 1970 in Itaquaquecetuba ; real life Marcos Evangelista de Moraes ) is a former Brazilian soccer player . His regular position was on the right side of defense, but he is best known for his quick forays into half of the opponent. In Europe, Cafu played in Serie A for AS Roma and AC Milan and was Italian champion once with each club. He also won the Champions League with Milan in 2007 . From 1990 to 2006, Cafu played 142 times for the Brazilian national team , making it Brazil’s record international player . With the Seleção, Cafu took part in four world championships ( 1994 , 1998 , 2002 , 2006 ), where he became world champion in 1994 and 2002 (as captain). He also won the Copa America in 1997 and 1999 and the Confed Cup in 1997 . After the 2006 World Cup, he ended his national team career and then played two seasons at the club.

In Brazil he had great successes with São Paulo FC , such as winning the Brazilian championship. In 1995 he played his first games in Europe for the Spanish club Real Saragossa , before returning to Brazil shortly afterwards, where he played for Juventude and Palmeiras. It was not until the 1997/1998 season that he finally came to Europe. First he was under contract with AS Roma , for which he made his debut on October 1, 2000 in the game against FC Bologna and was a total of 64 times on the field. In 2001 he was Italian champion with the Romans . At the beginning of the 2003/2004 season he moved to AC Milan , with whom he was again champion and won the Champions League in the 2006/07 season. In the summer of 2008, Cafu first ended his career before he joined the English club Garforth Town in January 2009 , which plays in the Northern Premier League Division One North, the eighth English division. He only played there for two months before finally ending his career on March 1, 2009.

National team

Cafu made his debut in the Seleção on September 12, 1990 . He is the only footballer who has ever made it to play in three World Cup finals ( 1994 , 1998 and 2002 ); even Pele only took part twice due to an injury. In 1994 and 2002 Brazil won the finals. He also won the Copa America with Brazil in 1997 and 1999 and the Confederations Cup in 1997 . Along with Roberto Carlos, he is the only player to have made it to six finals.

Cafu was South America's record player with 142 international matches until September 8, 2007, before being overtaken by Iván Hurtado from Ecuador. He was also the captain of his national team in the first two preliminary round matches of the 2006 World Cup . In the third group game he was not used because he had already received a yellow card and he would have been suspended in another for the round of 16, for which Brazil had already qualified. In the last sixteen and quarter-finals he was used again, but then retired after a 1-0 defeat against France . He won 16 games at world championships, which was a record until the final of the 2014 World Cup (17th World Cup victory by Miroslav Klose ).
